Nigel Gibson: Fanon, Politics & Psychiatry. 30 March @ CLP & UKZN

POSTED ON August 14, 2017 BY admin

We’re thrilled to welcome Nigel Gibson back to CLP. Prof Gibson is based at Emmerson College in the USA, and is also an honorary professor at UHURU. He is a former recipient of the Frantz Fanon Lifetime Achievement Award.
On the 50th anniversary of Frantz Fanon’s death, Nigel was a central contributor to our 2011 “Fanomenal Event” which brought together a seriously impressive line-up of militant thinkers. Recently he’s been working on newly-uncovered archival material from Fanon’s psychiatric training, reflection and practice. In his influential 2011 book, Fanonian Practices in South Africa,Gibson commented that his intention is not to “recuperate the historical Fanon but to recreate Fanon’s philosophy of liberation in a new situation”. Don’t miss this opportunity to be part of that ongoing and vital task to think our situation anew.
There’ll be two events you can join us for:
1. A smaller padkos conversation around ‘Fanon, our current context, and the praxis of emancipatory politics’. This will take place between 10 am and 12:30 pm in the CLP Board Room in Burger Street.
2. A public seminar co-hosted with the Paulo Freire Project* on‘Fanon, politics and psychiatry’. This one’s kicking off with drinks and snacks from 4:30pm at the UKZN’s Centre for Visual Arts Gallery on Ridge Road.
To help with preparations, PLEASE let us know if you plan to come along to either event.Email: or call Cindy @ (033) 2644 380.
