John Holloway is coming to PMB: Message from the Director, Graham Philpott

PADKOS NO 29
Next week Tuesday 9 October, John Holloway will be with us for our Padkos event. In all the busyness of the preparation, we often catch ourselves thinking – what a privilege, what an opportunity, what an inspiration to have John Holloway with us, sharing in discussion.

Some of us were with John at a conference in Grahamstown last weekend and came away struck by his wisdom, clarity of thought, the richness of years of experience acting and thinking with movements in Mexico, his humility and sense of humanity, his eagerness to learn – what a refreshing encounter! In his presentation at the conference, John talked about the need for “organisation based on the recognition of dignity” – a simple affirmation that stands in contrast to the dominant politics and practise of our time. Such organisation is based on our “mutual recognition as subjects who must change the world”.

Tuesday promises to be a challenging and inspiring day, so please confirm your attendance with Cindy as soon as you can. The schedule of the day is as follows:

  • 9.00 at the University Club: Padkos event. This will be a space where those on our Padkos e-mail list will have an opportunity to listen to and engage with John Holloway on questions of changing the world.
  • 12.00 at the University Club: light lunch for Padkos participants.
  • 1.30 at Room 107 in the New Arts Building UKZN: Public Seminar presented by John Holloway. This is open to the public, so encourage as many as possible to attend.
  • 3.00 at the University Club: some good live music provided by Pan Latino. Yes, we have confirmed that Pan Latino will be with us on Tuesday afternoon! What a great opportunity to have a more informal space to connect with John and others – feeding ourselves with some inspiring creative padkos.

We are very excited about John Holloway being with us next week – and we look forward to you sharing this time with us.
